PostSubject: Back to Hogwarts [Andy O'Reilly]   Thu Apr 25, 2013 11:43 am

[So per special request, Andy and Leah are getting on the train. This thread is a flashback. We will jump to the event thread later. Just to let everyone know what's going on.]

Leah Davies wished her parents a sad farewell. Leaving at the beginning of term was always a difficult time for the three of them. They had always been close, and the Davieses doted on their only daughter. Even though they knew she needed to be sent off to continue her witchcraft education, it was with regret that they brought her to the train station at the beginning of each term.
Her trunk was already in a compartment far in the back of the train. So far, it was empty except for her. Leah hoped that she would not have to share it with anybody she didn't like. A long train ride with some would be cruel and unusual punishment.
A quick kiss on the cheeks and tight hugs from her parents, and then she boarded the train, her owl flapping behind her. She sat down in the silent compartment and waited to see who would join her. Her fingers were already itching to touch a piano again.

With a sigh, Andy stood still, drawing his shoulders in a bit as his mother drew her arms around her youngest son, pulling him into her chest and squeezing before letting go. The boy adjusted his tie as she let him go, brushing imaginary dust from his shoulder. While his older brother walked off, leading his younger sister onto her first train ride. Rory however, much to everyone's surprise, was set to patrol the train as a prefect. Yes, no one quite saw that one coming. Andy figured this was some sort of way Dumbledore was trying to break his cousin of the boy's bad habits and give him a little taste of power and responsibility. Good luck with that. Andy didn't even say anything as he walked away from his family, determined to find an empty box so he wouldn't to (shudder) socialize. No such luck, however. Every box seemed to be full or occupied, prompting a scowl from the Irish lad. But he pushed on through, desperate to find a box, any box with someone he could at least stand. There were two. And it just so happen he ran into one of them. Intelligent green eyes sized up the Ravenclaw girl as she sat alone in the compartment. He thought about it for a moment before sliding the door open and stepping in with his normal grace, setting himself across from Leah without a word.

As the compartment door opened, she turned her head and saw Andy of all people entering. She could not help but think how quiet of a train ride this would end up being. Or a train ride with her shouting at the boy.
"Hello," she said quietly in greeting knowing she had just been staring at him in confusion for a few minutes. "Are you ready for the new year?"

Andy pulled of his glasses as he sat, closing his eyes and pulling a hankercheif from his pocket and wiping the fabric over the glass. He kept his eyes closed through the process, delibrately making the girl wait for her question to be answered. All his movements were slow and delibrate. He replaced the glasses over his eyes, adjusting them for a moment before opening his eyes again. "Hello." He greeted quietly. "Quite."

She sighed thinking that he seemed even more standoffish than usual. But the company could have been worse. Families were still busy saying goodbye to each other outside the window, and Leah watched them absently. It would be a quiet compartment at least. With the shy Ravenclaw and Andy in the same place, nobody would want to join them.
"Did you get much practicing in during the holidays?" she asked quietly still looking out the window. Her home piano had endured much playing from herself and her mother. She missed the constant sound of music already.

Andy's gaze drifted out the window as he looked over at the families out the window. He scoffed a bit to himself, before turning his gaze back into the compartment. Well, at least, with these two in here, no one else would dare join. He noded a bit at her question. "The violin you mean. Yes, much to the dismay of my parents, I did indeed." He said, a ghost of a smile on his lips.

"Why don't your parents like you practicing?" she asked almost immediately. "Shouldn't they enjoy hearing you play? I mean, it's not like you are bad at it..." she trailed off. Her own parents had always encouraged her love of music and had even been upset when she didn't practice.
She was trying to not ask as stupid of questions around Andy as she usually did. It was a new year. Maybe she could make a better impression of herself to him.

Another hint of a smile graced his lips. He almost chuckled. "Well, you see, I don't exactly follow a practice schedual, so to say. I like to play when I think, so suffice to say, it happens often. And, I play at all hours, as I don't sleep much. Sometimes not for days." He shrugged as he spoke, as if this was nothing, disclosing his habits so casually.

"I never follow a practice schedule... Even if I play at midnight, I won't be yelled at. But that is probably only because my home is used to music," she said just as the train horn sounded. She watched the few other students run to the train, one of whom looked just like the Potter boy. Her parents were still on the platform, and she gave them one last sad wave and smile. "I'm going to miss that..." she added in a whisper. The train had not even left the station, and she was already homesick.

"Well, my family isn't as lienent." Not that their complaints even registered to him. He looked out as the horn sounded again. He looked back out the window, eyes drawn to the sight of his mother among the crowd. Who was waving at her other son, James, who hung half out the window, undoubedly on a dare. He shook his head a bit, sighing. "Miss what?"

She blushed slightly realizing that he had heard her. "Home... I guess..." she answered him. "Hogwarts is nice, but I always miss being home." Her fingers tapped an uneven rhythm as she suddenly became nervous around him. For some reason she really wanted him to like her this term. Maybe they could become friends and not... whatever it is they are...

"Home..." He scoffed a bit as the train started down the track. "That makes one of us." He said, pushing the glasses up on his face. He slipped the faux leather book bag off his shoulder and let it slip onto the seat next to himself.

"It shouldn't be like that..." she said quietly. "Children shouldn't feel uncomfortable in their own home..." She watched him take off his bag and almost fell out of her seat when the train started moving. She said a silent goodbye to her family and muggle life, and then turned back to watch him. Her owl suddenly hooted loudly and she jumped.

ooc: Totally forgot about his owl. Pretend he brought it in with him.

He shrugged a bit. "There's a lot of things children shouldn't be, but it happens." He watched out the window as the train began to pick up speed. His gaze was drawn to the hooting of the owl. His own barn owl looked over from his cage and much like his owner, simply stared at the other and scooted further into his cage.

"I'm sorry," she muttered quietly as she stood up to dig in her own carry on bag. "I think she felt ignored." She tossed a treat at the owl perched on the shelf above her seat. "She was used to being attached over the summer." She glanced at Andy's barn owl and held out the bag of treats to him. "Do you think your owl would want one?"

Andy and the owl exchanged a glance. Wolfgang Amodeus Mozart, so named by Andy, set to preening his wings, ignoring everyone else who might have existed at some point. Andy looked over at the bag, then back to Mozart. "Depends on his mood." He stated. "I'd watch your fingers around him, by the way. He can be.... Finicky."

"Oh..." she said and lightly threw the treat into the owl's cage. She waited for an explosion of feathers or some other indication that the owl did not appreciate her offering. Unsocial just like his owner, she thought to herself in slight amusement.

The bird watched the treat fall to the floor of his cage. His face was down turned as he watched it for a moment, before turning his gaze back to Leah. He blinked once, then twice, looking less then impressed. Other than that, he didn't move a feather. Andy shrugged.

She gave a slight giggle and shrugged. "It will be there for you when you are ready to eat it," she told the owl. Her own had decided to take a nap after eating the treat. Leah sighed and looked out at the countryside, not sure what else to chat about.

Andy shrugged again, an almost smile almost passing his face. Mozart went back to preening his feathers. At some point, he would eat it. On his own time of course. Andy was aware of the silence that followed. He was also aware it would be considered awkward, were he any more socialally aware. But he wasn't.

Different shades of green passed by the window quickly. One of the few things Leah admired about the train ride was the scenery they passed by on the way. A few students walked past the compartment, but did not even attempt to come chat. "I wonder when the trolley will come," she said interrupting the silence.

Andy pulled his bag into his lap. He slid the buckles open and pulled out a book, surprise surprise, and set to reading. Out the corner of his eye he noted people passing outside their compartment. A few paused a few times, but no one dared walk in. "Hmm? Trolley, oh." He said without looking up. "Don't care." He deadpanned. Among all his other traits, Andy was first of all, less then wealthy. He had no money to spare on trivial things like sweets.

She sighed again and returned to looking out the window. Last year, Potter had returned to Hogwarts in an old flying car. Maybe something weird like that would happen again. It was still early, and Andy had buried himself in a book. Leah would never understand why he hadn't become a Ravenclaw. It was probably just because of his family. The Weasleys' were all in Gryffindor. Maybe the hat chose particular bloodlines over others.

Andy heard the sigh. He looked up without actually lifting his face. He supposed he should really say something. But then again, what was he supposed to say? He shifted a bit uncomfortably in his seat. He honest to Godric had no idea what to say to the girl. One of his few flaws.

The silence was interrupted by a knock on the door, and Leah jumped again. She turned around and saw the trolley witch smiling at the door. She had gotten lost in her thoughts and watching the countryside. "Anything from the trolley?" the kindly witch asked. Leah nodded, stood up, and walked to the door.
"Umm... two chocolate frogs and a bag of Bertie Botts?" she said holding out some sickles.
